Pointed Brush is a magical tool for the beginning or experienced lettering artist. Versatility, speed and movement are some of the advantages of the pointed brush...not as easily achieved with the nib or ruling pen. Whether working small, medium or large, wild or exotic, formal or casual, we will test the brushes. From pressure to possibility, working with the basic strokes and warmups to an alphabet and then guidance to help develop your personal style...you will be encouraged to create your own magic! Time will also be spent to test a variety of surfaces and media for future reference, and actually writing words and quotes...perhaps some to be framed.

Yes, Decorated Neuland. We will begin with a quick review of the letters and then proceed to use the same principles of decoration which are applied to Versals and Roman letters, but with a more contemporary look.
Neuland is a very versitile, chunky, contemporary style of lettering...it can be serious, dramatic or whimsical.
Individual attention will be given to each participant...we each have a unique vision within.
We will then place them into an accordion folded book of Arches black cover paper for future reference, and depending on how fast you work, the stunning piece(s) of artwork can either enchance your portfolio or be framed. We will also work on integrating this contemporary lettering into finished pieces of work
or collaborations with each other.

Spontaneous Combustion- This is a class full of tricks and techniques which are applied to actual design projects.
The vision of this class is to control the fear of failure and to encourage
participants to work quickly on several pieces at once...jumping from one to
the other spontaneously. And the combustion (no actual burning here) moves
from one person to another to the whole room.
I work with a myriad of media...bring whatever you have and we will try and use
it. The workshop will be fast-paced, positive and fun.
Come with an open mind, a willingness to get dirty, and share
an exciting adventure in design.
Knowledge of one or two alphabets is an asset, however I have taught
non-calligraphers who produced magnificent work by integrating hand lettering
into the designs.
This is a 3-5 day class and involves stretching even more than
in my other art related classes.

Collage Design is a fun way for everyone to take unfinished pieces, scraps, pieces of pretty papers, newsprint, etc. and create some real art. Collaborations are also encouraged in this class. We will work on a small scale to begin with - about 10 x 10 until the juices begin to flow, or you can work that size the entire time. The use of collage allows us to experiment with design before permanently adhereing it to the substrate. We will then place the finished pieces into a small folio for future reference. Individual attention and encouragement will be given to each participant.
